Colorado Backcountry: Loveland Pass

berthoud booter lines

Saturday we had a huge crew up at Loveland Pass shuttling in the monster van. By 10am, we had 9 people pilled inside doing laps. The pass had been closed for 3 days, while almost 2 feet of fresh snow dropped. 6:30am the pass was stilled closed, we knew it would be worth the wait. Around 7:40am the pass opened up and we hit our first few laps. It was pretty much one of the best days I've seen in years at Loveland Pass. It was soo deep most of the terrain looked different, we had 3 or 4 laps of completely untracked deep deep powder. The sun was starting to shine and things couldn't get much better. We made our way over to the G drop and eveyone hucked off. Mike (vangina crew) hit it first and had a completely untouched landing, Mike (scheer) dropped next, then myself, then Mike (of heavywinter) hit it. The crowds started to build so we decided to move on and hit some other areas. We dropped sheep creek, first and second tri's as well. Over at the cabin, there was enough snow to jump off the roof, so we did that a few times too. Photos: Alex M.

Colorado Backcountry: Berthoud Pass & Loveland Pass

Photo: JP Location: Loveland Pass - Idiot's Cornice

1/27/06 Friday - Loveland Pass - Idiot's Cornice - Got up to the Loveland Pass lot early on Friday and found 5" fresh or so. I took my time and geared up, hitch hiking was pretty slow. Did some laps around second tri's, rode a nice layer of pow on top of the huge base. First tri's and deadwood are even better, around 11am more people started to show up and I met up with a guy named Jameson. Zero wind and a beautiful bluebird day we decide to hike the ridge and drop Idiot's Cornice. After the 40 minute hike out the ridge toward Loveland Ski resort we were at the cornice and looking to drop in. I made my way out to the cornice and started to make snowboard cuts and get a large chunk to drop. This huge chunk I cut dropped down into the bowl below with lots of sluff, no slide. We hike up further to a nice untouched area of the cornice and proceeded too huck off. 4 laps later it is all tracked out and we had large smiles all around.

1/29/06 Sunday - Berthoud Pass - Current Creek - Mike, AKD and I met up early at the current creek drainage to find a nice spot and build a booter. The weather today wasn't very good, lots of wind and blowing snow. We hiked back into the safety of the trees and found a sweet spot above the Peter Rabbit hut. The booter was small with a huge powder field landing. At the run out you had multiple snow covered rocks and pillows to jib or slash. We killed the landing and decided to film a few shots dropping off the various rocks and features around. Around 1pm we dicided we'd had enough of the wind and snow, rode out to the cars and hit the rode. The last two days we probably averaged about 4 miles hiking total above 11,000ft.

Wyoming Backcountry: Jackson Hole Footage

Jackson Hole, WY Video (right click - save as)

Check out the video footage from the Jackson Hole trip. We really didn't film very much at all, but at least this will give you an idea of the amount of snow and sweet terrain. Some of the major highlights of the trip for me were hitting twin slides and glory bowl. Doing laps on chivers ridge and hitching our way back up to the summit. The footy includes shots from in and out of bounds near Jackson Hole resort. Rock Springs and Four Pines near Cody Peak was insane and deep. Chivers rigde on Teton pass, Glory Bowl and Twin Slides on Teton pass and Two Oceans on Togwotee pass. Lots of deep deep untracked snow everywhere. It's been a great year for Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. Thank you mother nature...

Wyoming Backcountry: Jackson Hole Update

1/14/06 - Togwotee Pass - SNOWING - Jordan and I made it up to Togwotee Pass a little bit late to hike "two oceans" on the drive into Jackson Hole. Tons of snow everywhere and a storm parked over the Tetons we were eager to get to the house and relax for the up coming pow fest. We'll get this on the way back.

1/15/06 - Teton Pass - Chivers Ridge - SNOWING - Jordan and I broke trail up "Chivers Ridge" early Sunday morning. After a short 30 minute hike you are on top of the ridge line with some sweet powder fields and open trees. We dropped down the ridge and headed to the traverse back to the hitch hike spot near the town of Wilson. We hiked a few laps and rode super deep Wyoming powder. Met a few cool locals, Meagan and Jill while breaking trail back out for another lap. Check out Meagan's site, www.raskolink.com

1/16/06 - Jackson Hole Resort - BLUEBIRD - The whole crew went over to Jackson for the day and it was rad. We did a tour of the mountain and hit some really nice backcountry lines out of the access gates. We hit Rock Springs and Four Pines area near Cody Peak. Unlimited waist deep powder turns back to the resort.

1/17/06 - Teton Pass - Chivers Ridge - SNOWING - We went back to hike "Chivers Ridge and Titty Mouse Ridge" today. Again we rode endless powder under greybird skies.

1/18 /06 - Jackson Hole Resort - SNOWING 9"+ - We got in line at the Gondola around 8:15am and it was packed. Gearing up for a huge powder day at Jackson everyone was out in force. The group got split up and Jordan, Adam, D, and myself rode the rest of the day. We found tons of sweet rock pillows, tons of powder, cliff drops, endless great terrain. Near the end of the day the pow was getting really choppy and tracked out.

Colorado Backcountry: Site Updates

You might have noticed a large increase in the speed and reliability of the site lately. We bought a hosting package from Dreamhost.com and it kicks ass! In under 12 hours, snowfilmer.com, weknowsnow.com, databases, and all DNS was completely moved. The new servers are sweet, and the plan is really nice. 20GB disk, unlimited MySQL, apple streaming server, 1TB of bandwidth a month, tons of goodies, and monthly increasing disk and bandwidth quotas. Dreamhost is highly recommended and if your interested please use the link above and get us some hosting discounts when you sign up.

Other changes, we've gotten some of the videos setup in iTunes as video podcasts. It's great to be able to download this stuff to your iPod. Ridertech.com also provides a podcast feed and it has some sweet footage and really cool google earth footy. Check us out in iTunes!

All the videos have been uploaded to Google's kick ass video hosting service. Only draw back is it sometimes takes a week or two before your video becomes live. A human reviews all videos before they go into the pool. Great streaming service where you can charge for content if you want. W.K.S. Videos @ Google

Keep an eye out for updates from Jackson Hole, WY... if we can find internet access. Enjoy!
