Colorado Backcountry: 3 Days In The Boat - 04.01.2007

Gaper Fools Day! Spent in the Routt County Backcountry on the outskirts of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. STE and I rolled up to the boat for a few days of pow and sleds. Had one of the best days yet snowboarding and snowmobiling until past the bell on Friday night. We must have banged out 15 laps between the two of us between 4pm and 8pm. Left the parking area about 8:30pm for the short drive up to the Cabins at Columbine near Hahns Peak. Met and rode with a bunch of cool people on Friday and even got some shots this trip. Colorado Backcountry: Snow Cave Expedition - 03.17.07 - 03.18.07

Snow Cave Expedition 2007
Vail Pass, Colorado
3-17-07 to 3-18-07

This was a plan that Aaron and I put together in the fall and finally made come to reality. I did a hut trip in the area last season and was fairly comfortable with the commitment.

The Start:

Aaron and I drove up separately and met at Copper to caravan to drop off my car in Red cliff. We found a road that looked like it was the right one and dropped off the car. No signs made me a little leery of getting a parking ticket or towed or something like that. But it was such a small, sleepy mountain town that I figured that paranoia was not justified. After leaving a note on the car we headed off to Vail Pass trailhead.

When we told the Parks and Rec employee what our plan was, she told us "we don't do overnight parking.", I countered with a calm explanation that I talked to the White River and Holy Cross guys and had the green light. After hearing that she said, "Oh, the overnight parking is just to the right over there."

Colorado Backcountry: Spring Storms - 03.25.2007

A foot or so of new wet heavy spring snow made for a fun day and lots of work.

Colorado Backcountry: Jonesin’ For Snow - 03.23.2007

Alex and I got out for a day on the sleds. Started late hoping the sun would soften up the crust a little bit. We had some bluebird in the morning but things quickly turned cloudy and low light. As we left around 2pm the snow was falling. We found a couple of good areas of snow and up around 12k in the large bowls it was nice and soft. Ended up riding the sleds most of the day, highmarking and breaking various parts on our sleds. Today my Lefty Throttle was the victim. Photos by Alex.
