The dog days of summer are here and to get my mind off the oppressive heat here in Colorado I’ve been finding myself pulling out old ski movies, filtering through images from the past year, and dreaming up goals for next season. The other night I was bored and so I put together a quick slideshow of highlights from the 2007-2008 ski season. It was a memorable one as we many parts of the state got hammered with record setting snowfall. This spring also brought some of the best spring/summer skiing I’ve seen in a long while as we got hit with some cold temps and snowy weather through a good part of May. Now that the season is over I’m beginning to shift focus on what’s to come for next year.

This past weekend Andy Dimmen and I camped up at the mouth of East Maroon Creek and ticked off a couple of fun ski lines. One of my goals for this season was to complete the Pyramid Group by making a summit descent from Lightning Pyramid’s east face. Two seasons ago Mark Cavaliero and I skied the Landry Line off Pyramid Peak. Last season I skied a first summit descent off Thunder Pyramid’s west face solo. The Pyramid group holds some of the most aesthetic and technical lines in the state. Most routes involve 4,000′+ of consistent vertical skiing from top to valley floor, high exposure, and lots of cliff bands and steep skiing.

The upper face:

There are several potential ski routes off Lightning Pyramid. The west face offers up some tight and steep couloirs dropping from the summit, while the east face is a good mix between a fluted Alaskan face and the cliff riddled north face of North Maroon Peak just across in the next valley. We opted for the east face as coverage was much better on the east side and it offered up more vertical than the west side. We also wanted to get a glimpse of the current conditions on the east face of Thunder, as that was one of Andy’s goals for this trip as well. Just a few weeks prior Chris Davenport and Ted Mahon skied a 1st descent of the east face of Thunder. After seeing photos from their trip the urge to get back up on that mountain heightened and so a plan was put into place.

With hot weather on the horizon and a 10 day ski trip to the PNW coming up the following weekend we were in a crunch to get this one done. This was really the final opportunity of the season to get after it. The goal was to ski Lightning earlier in the season, but due to scheduling conflicts and weather, Andy and I had to put it off more than a few times. It felt good to finally get it done, even though the conditions on the steep upper face were a bit sketchy to say the least.

We rode the sleds up Maroon Creek road and arrived at our camp sometime around the 11 o’clock hour Thursday night. The plan was to skin all the way up to the base of Lightning so we could get a quick jump on it the next morning, but since I had so much shit along with a Granite Gear pulk sled, our plan foiled quickly and we setup camp at the mouth of the creek. There was no way that sled would make it through the steep bushwhack up the creek in the middle of the night. Or should I rephrase and say that I wouldn’t have made it up as I had a whole bunch of luxury items in the sled and nowhere near packed for a light outing. So, after setting up camp really quickly we went to bed and set the alarm for 3:30am.

We awoke a few hours later and worked our way up the valley. Once you get into the valley proper it is a pretty flat and basic skin up to the base of the peak. From camp to the base it’s a good 4.5 mile skin with only a 1,000′-1,300′ gain in vertical. Not bad at all, but a lot of side-hilling if you choose to follow the trail.

The morning brought low clouds and mild temps. “Where the hell is the forecasted sunshine?” Andy said as we started our climb up the east face. Well, at least the sun wasn’t heating up the snow too fast, but due to the cloud cover the snow never really locked up tight overnight.

Andy skinning up towards the main face:

Fog began to roll in and out shrouding over the summit tops of the Pyramid group. It was a bit mysterious at times as it appeared we were being engulfed by the mountain.

Andy climbing the lower section:

Andy about 3/4 of the way up:

Scenery part way up:

Another view:

We continued to climb and made it to the summit right around the time the clouds broke and the sun came out. The climb up the face was fun and steep. The snow got deeper the higher we went. A good 18″ or so of wet snow had fallen a few nights prior, making for some rather tough climbing conditions up around the top.

Andy nearing the summit:

Andy walking along the narrow ridge with Thunder in the background:

We hung out on the summit for a good 45 minutes or so as the weather was near perfect with no wind and mild temps. By this time the sun wasn’t directly hitting the east face. With the cloud cover earlier in the day we figured the face needed a little more time to corn up.

Andy on the summit:

After eating some lunch and signing the register we got in position and made our descent down the gut of the east face. I dropped in first and found interesting snow conditions. The new wet snow was still moist and hadn’t setup since it fell a few nights prior. The underlying layers were fairly solid, but there was no telling what that new snow was going to do. So, we took it easy on the upper part of the face, skiing from rock band to rock band as carefully as possible.

Dave near the top:

Andy coming off the top:

Further down:

Once we got down a few hundred vert the snow was in much better shape and we were able to let our guard down a bit to ski more aggressively. The cliffs on this face are quite large. Anywhere from 50′-200′, do you definitely gotta have your route planned ahead of time as everything from above looks continuous.

More skiing:

The further we worked our way down the better the snow skied. We cranked fun GS turns on the long apron all the way down to the valley floor.

Further down:

The slog out was a bit nerve wracking as the sun had turned all the snow into sloppy and collapsable mashed potatoe soup. I think it took longer to get out than to get in, as we were constantly falling through trap doors and onto our faces. Not much fun at all. All in all it was a super fun day, and I’m glad we were able to get it done. I’d imagine that face is melting pretty fast with all the warm weather we’ve been having as of late. Definitely not a slope I would want to be on during a widespread wet slide cycle.

Pyramid Peak sunrise, day 2:

Sunrise and the Bells:

A late season snowstorm brought a good 10″-18″ of fresh powder to parts of Colorado on Friday night. Our original plans to head to Aspen for the weekend were scrapped after looking at the forecast. Instead, we headed for Clinton Peak, another fun high peak between Copper Mountain and Leadville. The climbing and skiing was lots of fun and conditions ended up being near perfect for our ski descent. The skin up the Clinton Amphitheater is a bit tedious as it is flat and boring for a good 2-3 miles, but once you start gaining elevation at the base of Clinton it becomes a super fun climb.

Clinton Peak is Colorado’s 80th highest peak and sits in both the Mosquito and Tenmile Ranges. After Clinton I only have McNamee and Traver left to ski to finish off the string of peaks between Copper and Leadville. Some good ski days have come about from this row of peaks. Pacific north face, Crystal north face, Drift west face, the Bermuda triangle off Atlantic, a powder run off the top of Jacque Peak, etc.

Mark just cresting the shadows nearing the apron:

We ended up skiing the NW couloir off the summit of Clinton. Weather was near perfect, although a bit cold on the summit, and the ski conditions were really good as we skied powder and some nice corn all the way back to the trucks down at the base of Clinton Reservoir. Enjoy the pics.

Ski Mountaineering season is ramping up and some big lines are going down almost daily. Last weekend was no exception, especially in the Elks, where several prized peaks and lines got skied in style. Our above average snowpack is holding up rather nicely, as we haven’t had too many warm days so far this spring. I’m hoping this trend continues over the course of the next month as there are still many objectives on the list.

Friday night we packed up the truck and headed over to Aspen for a weekend of peak bagging and skiing. The plan was to ski Maroon Peak, North Maroon Peak, and maybe the east face of Lightning Pyramid. Andy and I met up in Golden, packed the truck full of gear and food, and then continued on to Eagle to connect with Mark. A few hours passed and we found ourselves unloading at the winter trailhead for Maroon Creek. This was the same weekend Mark and I had skied Pyramid Peak a couple of year prior and we were amazed at how much more snow as on the ground this time around. In 2006 we rode the sled on pavement for the majority of the way, whereas this time around we were riding on 3-4′ of snow the entire way up to Maroon lake. It has indeed been a good winter for the Elks.

After packing the snowmobile and pull sled to maximum capacity with gear, camping equipment, and food, we were off into the windless moonlit night. The new sled is a complete workhorse and never flinched with having 3 skiers, several hundred pounds of gear and food, and a packed tow sled on back. In fact, she moved just as quickly and swiftly as she does when there is only one rider and no gear on-board. For those wondering, a few weeks ago I got a pretty good deal on a used Polaris Widetrak LX. This sled is the ultimate skiing machine as there is lots of storage room, 156X20X1.5 track, and hi-low gears. This sled will go anywhere you point it.

We arrived at Maroon Lake sometime after 10pm and quickly unpacked and setup camp. This would be our home base for the weekend and what a view we had:

Settling in for the night with our goal in the background:

We were in bed shortly after midnight with a wake up time of 4:15am. The wakeup call came too soon and it had seemed like we never really went to bed. None of us slept all that well, but it didn’t matter as the excitement and anticipation of skiing a coveted line on the Maroon Bells was making us all anxious. The snow had frozen nicely overnight making for a smooth and effortless skintrack. After a little bushwhacking through a large Aspen grove we soon found the trail and cruised up and over to the shores of Crater Lake just before sunrise.

Shortly after sunrise:

Andy on the apron with Pyramid in the background:

We climbed up and over the lower bench and made it to the broad and vast apron of the North Face of North Maroon by 7:00am. The towering and daunting north face loomed above us as we made our way up the apron and to the base of our climb. The North Face is a complicated series of cliff bands from top to bottom, making routefinding a key component. A lot of steep traversing and exposed moves are involved, adding a little flavor and spice to this particular line. The north face also holds a lot of local ski mountaineering history.

Moving along the apron:

Looking up at the north face:

The North Face holds a consistent pitch of around 50 degrees from beginning to end. Throwing in a labyrinth of cliff bands and tricky mixed climbing and you got yourself a perfect ski mountaineering objective. The face rises approximately 2,000′ from the apron, so there definitely is quite a bit of exposure involved as well as time to make it to the summit.

Going up?

Mark working around a spine:

Middle of the climb:

Climbing steep pitches don’t really phase me all that much, but when you add long traverses across steep pitches then that is a different ballgame. I’ve never liked traversing steeps as it just feels unnatural and I’m always afraid I’m going to catch my ski pants with my crampons and go tumbling. I’m sort of clumsy when it comes to doing things like that as each spring I always end up shredding my ski pants via my crampons.

Mark stopping for a quick rest:

The snow from the apron to the summit was near perfect for climbing and skiing. There was a good 8″ or more of soft powder lying on top of a good solid base, making the climb efficient and supportive. After making the first long traverse we made good time cruising straight up to the next traverse and crux of the day. There is a cliff band that splits up the line where you have to traverse climber’s right about 30 yards or so to a non-descript gulley. Finding this gully can be a little tricky as it is not overly apparent that it goes all the way to the upper snowfield. After unsuccessfully trying to get up and over the cliff band, we wrapped around a spine and found the entrance to the upper snowfield via a short and narrow gully. If one were to drop into the line blindly from the top, routefinding in this section would indeed be very tricky. Whenever you get on steep pitches the views below are always deceiving and it is hard to tell what is a cliff band and what is not.

Once we made it to the bottom of the upper snowfield we cruised up to Punk Rock Band, where the second crux of the day presented itself. Punk Rock Band is the uppermost cliff band that stretches clear across the entire North Face. The height of the cliffs range from 15′ to 35′. From the apron I recalled seeing a few exit points in the middle of the cliff band. We found the exit points, but they were super narrow, full of rotten snow, and involved some technical moves to get up and over. Instead of traversing clear across the face and taking the NE ridge to the summit, we decided to give these gullies a shot and pushed our way up and over. Andy’s choice was clearly the easier route as he made it over the cliff band rather quickly. Mark and I took a different route and battled to make it up and over. I enjoy mixed climbing as I grew up rock climbing, but Mark always has a hard time with snow, ice, and rock, so he was rather gripped. On top of that Mark has short arms and legs, making it even more difficult for him to get up these technical sections.

Mark working his way up through Punk Rock Band:

Once above Punk Rock Band all there is left is the summit ramp. A couple hundred vert of easy walking and you are done.

The summit ramp:

It took us about 6 hours to reach the summit as we took a few long breaks throughout our approach. The day was near perfect as there was virtually no wind, the air was mild, and the sky was crystal clear with only a few puffy clouds moving about. We enjoyed the fine weather on the summit for a good 45 minutes and then prepared for our descent.

The upper portion of the peak was your typical wind blown sastrugi, but once we got past Punk Rock Band, we had nothing but soft powder all the way to the apron. I always enjoy dropping in on a steep face and making those first few turns. I think it is the unknown and the uncertainty of what to expect that gets the blood flowing and the mind focused. Once those first few turns are over, then the body and mind relaxes and everything seems to become fluid in nature. For our descent, we decided to take the far skier’s right portion of Punk Rock Band. This connects you with the NE ridge route and involves one tricky move along the ridge and around the cliffs. Once we got under the Punk Rock Band, we traversed back to the middle and made our way down the steep and soft upper snowfield. The snow along this portion was absolutely sick. Deep, supportive, and consistent.

Mark across the middle face:

Andy painting the apron:

We worked our way down the face and as soon as we hit the apron that is when conditions went from powder to variable really quick. We worked our way back down to camp through the late afternoon. A rather fine day on a super fun mountain. After cooking up some dinner I brought Mark back down to his truck. It was a short trip for him as he had family in town and couldn’t stay the entire weekend.

Prime time is here. The prime ski mountaineering season has landed and big lines have been going down daily. Within the past few days several of Colorado’s prized gems have seen ski tracks down them. Capitol, Pyramid, Bells, Holy Cross, Thunder Pyramid, etc. are among the victims. For the past few seasons the third week in April has seemed to have been the unofficial opening of big mountain season here in Colorado. With the amazingly deep snowpack we were fortunate to have this year this spring promises to be one for the books.

This past weekend we set out for Aspen with a few goals in mind. We went 1-for-2 and managed to bag a smaller, yet aesthetic line as a consolation. Here are a few teaser pics to get started:

Unkowingly and entirely unplanned the Grizzly couloir has become a birthday tradition for me. This past Tuesday Marshal and I headed up and skied the couloir in pretty decent conditions despite the howling winds and freezing cold temps.
Skinning along the ridge:

Early morning light:

In my opinion the lines off Grizzly are some of the best in the Front Range when it comes to accessibility, fun factor, and aesthetic appeal. You really can’t find a trailhead that starts you much higher than Loveland Pass. You get all that below treeline slogging out of the picture and your entire approach is in the alpine. Not too shabby.

Some scenics from the approach:

Looking towards A-basin and Montezuma area:

Marshal:

Heading SE from the summit of Grizzly:

The cornice at the entry was a bit larger than last year, but manageable. Marshal dropped in first, sloughed out the upper few inches on the surface, and then continued to slice turns down the main gut. Our only concern was surface slough as the rest of the pack was solid and non-responsive. About half-way down the couloir we found some nice and light knee deep powder all the way down to treeline.

Up top:

This is where the snow got real nice:

Roundtrip took us around 4 hours. We left one vehicle at the Bakerville exit and another up on top of the pass. The ski out through Grizzly gulch was fast thanks to the snowshoers and XC skiers who packed down the trail nicely.

Mount of the Holy Cross is the northernmost 14er in the Sawatch Range. It is located in the Holy Cross Wilderness near Holy Cross City (a ghost town). Holy Cross was named for the distinctive cross-shaped snowfield on it’s northeast face. The mountain was formerly a U.S. National Monument but lost that status in 1950 because the number of visitors to the mountain, and the nearby “Pilgrim’s Hut” had waned, and the expense of fulltime staff could not be justified. The peak is still considered as a holy place for those of the Christian faith and is believed to hold a spiritual presence. The Holy Cross Wilderness area became a wilderness during the 70s, but this act of Congress did not mean the wilderness was protected. Holy Cross is a tough peak to climb due to the long approach and large vertical gain (5,000′+).

This mountain has been much celebrated in the past by painters and photographers. The first known publicly available photograph was published in National Geographic magazine. Thomas Moran depicted the mountain in a well-known oil painting, which now now is part of the collection of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City, OK.[5] It is still much photographed but it is not as well known today as it was in the past. This peak is a tough one as many variables come into play ranging from access to stability to weather to the approach. The stars aligned and we were fortunate enough to make a sneak attack on a peak that doesn’t come easy. Met up with the guys from Sweetgrass Productions to ski the cross couloir. I’ve been turned back three times on Holy Cross due to weather, snow conditions, etc., so it felt good to finally check this one off the list. The long and tedious approach paired with the access issues make Holy Cross a bit of a challenge.

In the winter NOVA guides out of Vail run a snowmobile guiding operation up the Tigwon road. They groom the road all the way to the summer trailhead, making the ride-in smooth and straightforward. Once the operation shuts down for the season the forest service closes the road for elk calving, forbidding people to access the trailhead. Not wanting to ski the couloir in June, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the snowpack in that region and waiting for the right opportunity to go for it.

Skinning up towards half-moon pass:

We got a late start due to complications with the sled, and so we didn’t start skinning from the summer trailhead until 9:45am. NOVA grooms more than just the usual summer road, but no matter what groomed road you choose to take, they all lead to the same location. The ride up to the trailhead was smooth and uneventful. They do a great job grooming the roads and maintaining them during the winter. We reached the trailhead, sorted our gear, and started skinning in the direction of the summer trail. All of the signs were buried under feet of snow. This area has had quite the winter in terms of snowfall.

I’m pretty sure we got off the summer trail within the first 5 minutes, but that didn’t matter as the approach to half-moon pass is pretty straightforward and direct. The forest leading up to half-moon pass is not very dense, making for an easy bushwhack.

Traversing around Notch Mountain:

Taking a break:

We cruised up and over the pass and traversed around the north and northwest slopes of notch mountain. These slopes are open and avalanche prone, but we weren’t very concerned as the pack underneath was very solid, wind hammered and well settled.

First sight of Holy Cross:

At this point we pulled our skins and made the 1,000′ descent down to the creekbed. The skiing wasn’t all that bad considering it was west facing and the previous two days were warm and dry. While others might not agree, I’m convinced the winter/early spring approach is easier than the summer approach mostly due to the fact you can ski and/or skate a lot of the mileage and vertical.

Ben skinning up the north ridge:

We all agreed that the north ridge would be the easiest route up to the summit and so we traversed to the base of the ridge and skinned all the way to the low saddle below the summit.

The flats across the lower ridge:

Ben cruising along:

Taking a rest before the last push:

Keeping our skins on for most of the way was key in saving energy and time. This ridge is a field of small boulders which make booting a pain. We didn’t have to bootpack until we reached the entrance of the Angelica couloir. It was right around this point where we started to slow down as the long approach was beginning to wear on our energy levels.

Looking up towards the top:

Some scenics:

Ben’s final steps to the summit:

We reached the summit shortly after 3pm and relaxed for a while as the weather was perfect and the winds were calm. The views from Holy Cross were astonishing.

I can’t wait to get back in the Reeds Meadow area to ski some lines and peaks. There is a lot of potential in this small zone of the Sawatch. Nick shot some footage while Ben and I sat back and soaked in the sun and the great views.

More Summit Scenics:

The entrance to the couloir drops right off the summit and maxes out around 45 degrees in pitch. Lower down in the couloir the slope mellows out to the mid to upper 30s. This time of year the couloir is pretty wide, especially at the top. Our main concern was the immediate convexity at the entrance.

Ben on the summit:

We set a plan and I dropped in to make a couple of ski cuts and to dig around a bit. The snowpack had settled very nicely over the past week. This area had gotten a good 15″ of new snow 6 days prior, and then another 8″ earlier in the week. All of that snow had bonded and settled fairly well, leaving us with the green light.

Checking out the entrance from the top:

Nick skiing:

Ben:

Snow conditions in the couloir were absolutely amazing. There was a good 10″ or so of super silky smooth powder on top of a firm layer, which made for effortless turns all the way down to the exit.

Since we didn’t bring a rope and some gear we didn’t ski and rapp the cliff band at the bottom. The exit was apparent and straightforward. We had excellent powder and fun turns all the way down to the Bowl of Tears

Looking back up the couloir:

There was a bunch of hooting and hollering as we reached the bottom and looked back up at our line. With some miles and a long sled ride ahead of us, we didn’t waste too much time on getting back to the trailhead.

The skin up and over half-moon pass:

The descent from the Bowl of Tears back to the creekbed can be tricky and cliffy. We skated the skier’s right side of the basin and found it to be the best and most efficient way out. We stayed as high as we could and managed to bypass heading all the way down to the creekbed. This part can be tricky, but if you keep pushing and traversing right, you will be in good shape and probably save a couple hundred vertical of climbing back up the pass.

One last glance at the peak:

We reached the pass right at sunset and donned our headlamps for the mellow descent back to the sled.

It felt good to finally ski this peak. I’m glad we were able to get it before the road closed for the spring. Holy Cross is a fun mountain with some amazing views and skiing surrounding it. We did scope a potential line off the south-southeast side of the summit, which would make for a fun alternative to the Cross Couloir.

After spending the weekend up north snowmobiling with my dad I was itching to get out for an early morning tour. Hooked up with Winter Park local Sam Forsyth and skied a nice couloir in Cleer Creek County early Tuesday morning. Conditions were prime for getting on something a bit bigger and more committing, so we decided to give this line near Pettingel Peak a shot. A couple hours of skinning a climbing brought us to this:

but we had our sights on a different goal for the day:

The approach was as basic and straightforward as it gets, and after a shortwhile we made the top and took in the gorgeous views.

Sam climbing:

Early morning light on Red Mountain:

We arrived at the top of our line to a fairly stiff ridgeline breeze, but the warm morning sun made things comfortable enough so we could take a break and check out the scenery. Front Range peaks and lines are starting to fill in nicely now that the spring weather pattern has shifted. Here’s looking over towards the Williams Fork Range:

After a brief break at the top we geared up and made our descent. Conditions were prime as there was a nice and firm upper layer, no breakable crust, and a good coating of chalky smooth snow on the surface, making for fun and easy turns for most of the way. The apron was hard as a rock, yet manageable. Down lower in the trees we found some nice recycled powder all the way to the truck down near the URAD mine. Good morning outing. I was a little late getting into work, but it was all worth it.

Same near the top of the line:

midway:

Over the past several years the ski/snowboard film industry has become over saturated with lots of companies putting out a film or two each Fall. With the growing popularity of ski film production we’ve seen the industry branch out beyond the typical “in your face XXX-ski porn, park rat, heli drops, exotic locales, mega cliff hucks, etc.” of the early years. Now we are seeing more emphasis placed on human powered skiing, backcountry skiing, ski mountaineering, and films with more story line and insight into the world of skiing.

Hand Cut Trailer:

http://www.sweetgrass-productions.com/clips/play.php?movie=handcut&title=Hand Cut
Sweetgrass Productions LLC is a Colorado-based film company rooted in the winter backcountry and mountain lifestyle. These guys are all about the ‘earn your turns’ philosophy and have put together a pretty nice trailer for their upcoming film Hand Cut, due out in September. From deep powder to deep-inset couloirs, these guys have it all in their film. I really like how they have put an emphasis on backcountry skiing and filming as an art and not just a sport.

The British Columbia Teaser blends the hand-fired days of the Canadian Pacific steam trains with blower skiing on Rogers Pass and Revelstoke. From these early railroad days to the miners of Colorado’s San Juan mountains, Hand Cut will convey the rugged, calloused-hand history of North American mountains.

Hand cut focuses on the purity of backcountry travel, blending self-propelled skiing with the rugged western history. DVD release september 2008, and check out

February has been a good month for finding new stashes, scoring quality pow, and recon for spring trips. The past few weeks we’ve been finding great powder and stability on north facing terrain from Vail Pass to Edwards. The snowpack has settled a bit as we’ve seen some moderate warming trends in between storms. You can definitely tell that Spring is right around the corner. Most of the high peaks are wind scoured, but just as long as we get some good spring snows the late season promises to be one for the books.

Splitboard Dave working his way over to North Shore:

Dave, with Mark behind:

After a several mile sled ride, a short skin, we arrived at the top of our zone for the day.

Dave taking in the views:

Then came the rewards. We took our first couple of laps down South Shore:

Temps warmed up quickly, so on our third lap we popped onto the other side of the ridge and skied nice and dry powder on North Shore:

Mark fired up to be outside:

The scenery wasn’t too bad either:
