Swany Ski Glove Review
Model: X-Change II (SX-30)
Used for: Backcountry Skiing and Snowmobiling
Days tested: 13

Each year I end up buying a few pair of ski gloves as I’ve never had luck with having one pair last me the whole season. They either come apart in the fingers, get eaten by the dog, lost on the trail, torn apart in the palm, or packed-in and worn from snowmobile and backcountry ski use. I have yet to find the “Ultimate” ski glove. I’ve tried the ultra expensive, flashy, name brand (Cloudveil, Marmot, BD, Patagonia, NF, etc.) and I’ve given the $10 specials at Walmart and Home Depot a shot, but have still come up empty on the perfect backcountry ski glove. Due to my low budget, I’ve resorted to using traditional work gloves found at the hardware stores as they only cost $15 or so and if they get lost or break down it’s not a big chunk of change I’m out.

In comes the Swany X-Change II, a warm, durable (so far), and comfortable crossover glove great for backcountry skiing and sledding applications. I’ve used this glove for a total of 13 days and I have to say I have no complaints about it yet. This glove beats out the competition for warmth, as I’ve found it to be the absolute warmest glove in it’s category. Swany does not sacrifice dexterity for warmth, as these gloves perform fairly well when it comes to those fine motor movements with the fingers. Swany uses a 3-layer design to help keep the cold out and your hands dry and comfortable.

The outer shell of this glove is ripstop and nylon tussah with leather reinforced palms. The Triplex lining system with dryfinger insert gives this glove the insulation and comfort you need for those cold sub-zero days in the backcountry, on the ski lift, or on the sled. I’m truly impressed at how warm this glove feels on the hands, as I truly put them to the test during this past cold spell Colorado has been having. The past few days we’ve seen temps hover around the -15 mark, and these gloves still kept my hands and fingers warm during ski touring. While they aren’t the most dexterous gloves on the market (Hestra takes the cake), they certainly hold up to the demand of long backcountry skiing days as well as keep moisture out better than any other product I’ve tested or used lately.

Features

Barrel lock cuff
Quick release strap with rubber pull tab
Pocket for ventilation or heat pack
Nose-wipe patch
Dryfinger waterproof, breathable insert

On a scale of 1-5 (5=Superior, 1=Crap) I would give these gloves a 4.5. I’m very happy with them so far. We’ll see how they fair by the end of the season. I’ll be sure to post an update then.

Interested in picking up a pair? Here: At only $80, these gloves are fairly priced.

Well, the switch has been turned to ‘ON’ and the snow has been coming down in piles as of late, which is good news for backcountry skiers across the state. A lot of folks were getting nervous and anxious through much of November as high pressure and dry weather dominated much of Colorado during the month. In comes the Thanksgiving weekend snowstorm, which left upwards of 4′ in several areas, and all of a sudden everyone is forgetting the dry and snow-deprived start to the season.

I haven’t been getting out as much as I would like as of late, mostly due to work and poor conditions, but since the big storm I’ve been poking around the usual spots close to home to see what Mother Nature has been up to. At first glance I have to say that conditions are pretty decent out there right now. Many areas still need a good 2′-3′ on top of what they already have, but at least terrain is skiable and enjoyable now.

Last week before the big storm, Mark and I went up to Uneva Pass for an afternoon of some pretty good skiing on the east side. Considering it hadn’t snowed in 10+ days prior to this outing, conditions were fairly good with some recycled powder. Few pics below:

A few days later the snow started to fall….and didn’t stop for 3.5 days straight. We quickly transitioned from early season scrap skiing, to full on pow charging within a few days. Amazing what the Colorado weather can do to lift the spirits and motivations of backcountry skiers! On one of the storm days we hit up the south side of Uneva and hit the jackpot. The snow wasn’t as light as I thought it would be, but I wasn’t complaining as we needed a good wet/sticky/basebuilder type of storm. Putting the skintrack in:

It has been a rather slow start to the season here in Colorado. Not only has it been dry and warm, but storms have only been yielding a few inches here and there, not the feet we need to start a good base. Despite the lack of snowfall this season, I’ve still managed to get out for a few decent tours. This time of year is always good preparation for getting your touring legs back into shape as well as your awareness and backcountry travel mindset in tune.

Our starting point for the day:

This past weekend I connected with Andy and Colin on a tour up New York Mountain in the Northern Sawatch range. We met early at Colin’s place in Chief Hosa and managed to drive the truck all the way up the 4×4 road to the summer trailhead. A good 12″-15″ of snow blanketed the road making for an interesting and hairy ride up the jeep road. We made it to the trailhead from the town of Eagle in about an hour and quickly got packed up and ready to go for the day. Not expecting we would make it all the way up to the trailhead in the truck, we had planned on this being a long day rather than a quick 2 mile, 1,500′ jaunt up to the summit. Knowing we had a really short climb to the summit we got cocky and started making comments on how we would be lapping the couloirs of New York Mountain this day. Well, karma kicked us in the ass and made our anticipated ’short’ day into a rather long one.

Just reaching treeline:

Colin with Edwards in the background:

Andy further down the ridge:

We blazed up the lower trail and made it to treeline rather quickly and decided to check out the ridgeline to get a glimpse of the couloirs coming off of New York. Our options were to either follow the long ridge up to the summit of New York and then drop our line of choice or ski a line off the ridge down to the base of the couloirs and climb our intended ski route. We chose the latter as we really didn’t get a good view of the face and didn’t have a good sense of the snowpack we would be dealing with once in the couloir. We scrambled up the ridge a little ways and finally settled on a somewhat spicy line down to New York lake.

Colin and Andy scoping out some options off the ridgeline:

Run #1 down off the ridge:

Colin enjoying the pow:

Andy’s turn:

Travel from the lake to the base of the couloir was rather heinous due to the thin snowpack and maze of large boulders and rockfall. After some work and patience we finally made it to the base of the couloir and began booting up the apron. The snow in the couloir was fairly consistent, with the exception of the thin ice layer on top.

Colin taking a look at our options:

Going up:

Thanks to Andy for putting in the bootpack:

Andy:

We climbed a good 1500′ to the top of the chute and made our descent shortly thereafter as the daylight was beginning to fade. The skiing was so-so due to the thin crust layer on top. If it hadn’t been for the crust ski conditions would have been much more favorable. Once we reached the bottom of the line, we put our skins back on and trudged our way west to our exit couloir. Our exit couloir was a minefield of instabilities and downright crappy snow conditions making our ascent rather stressful. It was our only way back up to the ridge without having to contour and take a major detour, so we pushed through and played it super conservatively. We found lots of pockets of collapsing snow, whomphing, and cracking. We played it safe by hugging the rock wall and using more rock to climb up our exit rock than snow. While the snow was thin, it still had potential of destruction due to the large exposed boulders near the bottom. We managed to make it up the exit couloir and onto the ridge by dusk and pushed our way back to the truck shortly thereafter.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) is in a very tight position this season because of a $25,000 budget shortage. This kind of shortage will cripple backcountry avalanche forecasts in the future causing CAIC to cease spring forecasts and/or possibly close one of their field operation centers. To help ease the shortage, we are designing and running a fundraising event entitled, “The CAIC Benefit Bash”. The CAIC Benefit Bash will be held at THE RIVERWALK CENTER in Breckenridge, CO on November 8th, 2008 starting at 5pm. Our purpose is to help ease financial impacts of the large loss of funding this year, and help the CAIC in continuing to provide a vital recourse to backcountry enthusiasts. Avalanches kill an average of six people every year in Colorado which accounts for one-third of all avalanche deaths in the United States. The purpose of the CAIC is to minimize the economic and human impact of snow avalanches on the recreation, tourism, and commerce industries. They succeed in achieving their purpose through a dual mission of forecasting and public education. As more and more people venture into the backcountry, it is imperative that we continue to have this resource available.

The colors this year have been vibrant, especially in and around the Vail valley and northern mountain regions. With winter fastly approaching, I’ve been getting out as much as possible to enjoy the last stretch of backpacking season before the mother nature wraps her white winter cloak over the high country of Colorado. Most summers i’m counting the days to winter, but for some reason this summer I’ve been really enjoying the camping, biking, hiking, climbing, backpacking, etc. more so than ever before. I’ve never been a fan of summer, but this year I truly took advantage of what our fine state has to offer during the summer months and had a great time. I wanted to take the camera out for at least one fall foliage backpacking trip and so last weekend I headed up to the Gore Range and ventured high up into the upper Piney drainages for some solitude and peak bagging. Below are some shots from that weekend. Enjoy.

Near Piney Lake:

These guys were hanging out around my camp for most of the weekend:

Within 5 mintues the sky went from cloudless to full-on stormy. Nothing like a warm camp fire:

Some nice color on the way home:

The days are getting shorter, the nights colder, and the anticipation of the coming season is growing with each passing day. In the mix of all the new gear hype and changing of the seasons this year’s ski porn trailers have been surfacing left and right. Sweetgrass Productions, a grassroots Colorado film company out of the Springs, have stepped up to the plate and found their niche in the ski film making industry with their new film “Hand Cut”. Sweetgrass Productions aims their focus on filming remote backcountry lines as well as capturing a glimpse of mountain living and culture. They take an artistic approach to ski film making and have done a superb job with “Hand Cut”, a film that captures the soul of our sport blending some of the roots of backcountry skiing in the San Juans and interior British Columbia region with the progression of backcountry skiing as we see it today.

I got the opportunity to ski and film with these guys a few days this past winter and their passion and dedication towards backcountry skiing and mountain culture/history is radiant. They are young and upcoming artists/skiers/storytellers who live for sharing the essence of the backcountry skiing experience through the medium of film and digital video. “Hand Cut” will most definitely rival related filmmakers such as Powderwhores and the like.

Some great athletes are featured in the film such as Colorado’s own, Nick Devore, Coast Range ski mountaineering legend, John Chilton, and BD rider Will Cardamone. Filmed on location in Alaska, British Columbia, and Colorado, this film will satiate the senses and stoke the fire for the season to come. A lot of hard work and sweat into making this film become a reality, but it’s quite apparent all of that hard work has or will pay off for Nick Waggonner (Director) and crew. This is some of the best shot backcountry riding I’ve seen in some time as each scene has been carefully planned out and executed.

Anyway, enough talk about the film, check out the trailer and be sure to get yourself to the World Premiere in Aspen this coming weekend as it will not disappoint.

The dog days of summer are here and to get my mind off the oppressive heat here in Colorado I’ve been finding myself pulling out old ski movies, filtering through images from the past year, and dreaming up goals for next season. The other night I was bored and so I put together a quick slideshow of highlights from the 2007-2008 ski season. It was a memorable one as we many parts of the state got hammered with record setting snowfall. This spring also brought some of the best spring/summer skiing I’ve seen in a long while as we got hit with some cold temps and snowy weather through a good part of May. Now that the season is over I’m beginning to shift focus on what’s to come for next year.

This past weekend Andy Dimmen and I camped up at the mouth of East Maroon Creek and ticked off a couple of fun ski lines. One of my goals for this season was to complete the Pyramid Group by making a summit descent from Lightning Pyramid’s east face. Two seasons ago Mark Cavaliero and I skied the Landry Line off Pyramid Peak. Last season I skied a first summit descent off Thunder Pyramid’s west face solo. The Pyramid group holds some of the most aesthetic and technical lines in the state. Most routes involve 4,000′+ of consistent vertical skiing from top to valley floor, high exposure, and lots of cliff bands and steep skiing.

The upper face:

There are several potential ski routes off Lightning Pyramid. The west face offers up some tight and steep couloirs dropping from the summit, while the east face is a good mix between a fluted Alaskan face and the cliff riddled north face of North Maroon Peak just across in the next valley. We opted for the east face as coverage was much better on the east side and it offered up more vertical than the west side. We also wanted to get a glimpse of the current conditions on the east face of Thunder, as that was one of Andy’s goals for this trip as well. Just a few weeks prior Chris Davenport and Ted Mahon skied a 1st descent of the east face of Thunder. After seeing photos from their trip the urge to get back up on that mountain heightened and so a plan was put into place.

With hot weather on the horizon and a 10 day ski trip to the PNW coming up the following weekend we were in a crunch to get this one done. This was really the final opportunity of the season to get after it. The goal was to ski Lightning earlier in the season, but due to scheduling conflicts and weather, Andy and I had to put it off more than a few times. It felt good to finally get it done, even though the conditions on the steep upper face were a bit sketchy to say the least.

We rode the sleds up Maroon Creek road and arrived at our camp sometime around the 11 o’clock hour Thursday night. The plan was to skin all the way up to the base of Lightning so we could get a quick jump on it the next morning, but since I had so much shit along with a Granite Gear pulk sled, our plan foiled quickly and we setup camp at the mouth of the creek. There was no way that sled would make it through the steep bushwhack up the creek in the middle of the night. Or should I rephrase and say that I wouldn’t have made it up as I had a whole bunch of luxury items in the sled and nowhere near packed for a light outing. So, after setting up camp really quickly we went to bed and set the alarm for 3:30am.

We awoke a few hours later and worked our way up the valley. Once you get into the valley proper it is a pretty flat and basic skin up to the base of the peak. From camp to the base it’s a good 4.5 mile skin with only a 1,000′-1,300′ gain in vertical. Not bad at all, but a lot of side-hilling if you choose to follow the trail.

The morning brought low clouds and mild temps. “Where the hell is the forecasted sunshine?” Andy said as we started our climb up the east face. Well, at least the sun wasn’t heating up the snow too fast, but due to the cloud cover the snow never really locked up tight overnight.

Andy skinning up towards the main face:

Fog began to roll in and out shrouding over the summit tops of the Pyramid group. It was a bit mysterious at times as it appeared we were being engulfed by the mountain.

Andy climbing the lower section:

Andy about 3/4 of the way up:

Scenery part way up:

Another view:

We continued to climb and made it to the summit right around the time the clouds broke and the sun came out. The climb up the face was fun and steep. The snow got deeper the higher we went. A good 18″ or so of wet snow had fallen a few nights prior, making for some rather tough climbing conditions up around the top.

Andy nearing the summit:

Andy walking along the narrow ridge with Thunder in the background:

We hung out on the summit for a good 45 minutes or so as the weather was near perfect with no wind and mild temps. By this time the sun wasn’t directly hitting the east face. With the cloud cover earlier in the day we figured the face needed a little more time to corn up.

Andy on the summit:

After eating some lunch and signing the register we got in position and made our descent down the gut of the east face. I dropped in first and found interesting snow conditions. The new wet snow was still moist and hadn’t setup since it fell a few nights prior. The underlying layers were fairly solid, but there was no telling what that new snow was going to do. So, we took it easy on the upper part of the face, skiing from rock band to rock band as carefully as possible.

Dave near the top:

Andy coming off the top:

Further down:

Once we got down a few hundred vert the snow was in much better shape and we were able to let our guard down a bit to ski more aggressively. The cliffs on this face are quite large. Anywhere from 50′-200′, do you definitely gotta have your route planned ahead of time as everything from above looks continuous.

More skiing:

The further we worked our way down the better the snow skied. We cranked fun GS turns on the long apron all the way down to the valley floor.

Further down:

The slog out was a bit nerve wracking as the sun had turned all the snow into sloppy and collapsable mashed potatoe soup. I think it took longer to get out than to get in, as we were constantly falling through trap doors and onto our faces. Not much fun at all. All in all it was a super fun day, and I’m glad we were able to get it done. I’d imagine that face is melting pretty fast with all the warm weather we’ve been having as of late. Definitely not a slope I would want to be on during a widespread wet slide cycle.

Pyramid Peak sunrise, day 2:

Sunrise and the Bells:

A late season snowstorm brought a good 10″-18″ of fresh powder to parts of Colorado on Friday night. Our original plans to head to Aspen for the weekend were scrapped after looking at the forecast. Instead, we headed for Clinton Peak, another fun high peak between Copper Mountain and Leadville. The climbing and skiing was lots of fun and conditions ended up being near perfect for our ski descent. The skin up the Clinton Amphitheater is a bit tedious as it is flat and boring for a good 2-3 miles, but once you start gaining elevation at the base of Clinton it becomes a super fun climb.

Clinton Peak is Colorado’s 80th highest peak and sits in both the Mosquito and Tenmile Ranges. After Clinton I only have McNamee and Traver left to ski to finish off the string of peaks between Copper and Leadville. Some good ski days have come about from this row of peaks. Pacific north face, Crystal north face, Drift west face, the Bermuda triangle off Atlantic, a powder run off the top of Jacque Peak, etc.

We ended up skiing the NW couloir off the summit of Clinton. Weather was near perfect, although a bit cold on the summit, and the ski conditions were really good as we skied powder and some nice corn all the way back to the trucks down at the base of Clinton Reservoir. Enjoy the pics.

Ski Mountaineering season is ramping up and some big lines are going down almost daily. Last weekend was no exception, especially in the Elks, where several prized peaks and lines got skied in style. Our above average snowpack is holding up rather nicely, as we haven’t had too many warm days so far this spring. I’m hoping this trend continues over the course of the next month as there are still many objectives on the list.

Friday night we packed up the truck and headed over to Aspen for a weekend of peak bagging and skiing. The plan was to ski Maroon Peak, North Maroon Peak, and maybe the east face of Lightning Pyramid. Andy and I met up in Golden, packed the truck full of gear and food, and then continued on to Eagle to connect with Mark. A few hours passed and we found ourselves unloading at the winter trailhead for Maroon Creek. This was the same weekend Mark and I had skied Pyramid Peak a couple of year prior and we were amazed at how much more snow as on the ground this time around. In 2006 we rode the sled on pavement for the majority of the way, whereas this time around we were riding on 3-4′ of snow the entire way up to Maroon lake. It has indeed been a good winter for the Elks.

After packing the snowmobile and pull sled to maximum capacity with gear, camping equipment, and food, we were off into the windless moonlit night. The new sled is a complete workhorse and never flinched with having 3 skiers, several hundred pounds of gear and food, and a packed tow sled on back. In fact, she moved just as quickly and swiftly as she does when there is only one rider and no gear on-board. For those wondering, a few weeks ago I got a pretty good deal on a used Polaris Widetrak LX. This sled is the ultimate skiing machine as there is lots of storage room, 156X20X1.5 track, and hi-low gears. This sled will go anywhere you point it.

We arrived at Maroon Lake sometime after 10pm and quickly unpacked and setup camp. This would be our home base for the weekend and what a view we had:

Settling in for the night with our goal in the background:

We were in bed shortly after midnight with a wake up time of 4:15am. The wakeup call came too soon and it had seemed like we never really went to bed. None of us slept all that well, but it didn’t matter as the excitement and anticipation of skiing a coveted line on the Maroon Bells was making us all anxious. The snow had frozen nicely overnight making for a smooth and effortless skintrack. After a little bushwhacking through a large Aspen grove we soon found the trail and cruised up and over to the shores of Crater Lake just before sunrise.

Shortly after sunrise:

Andy on the apron with Pyramid in the background:

We climbed up and over the lower bench and made it to the broad and vast apron of the North Face of North Maroon by 7:00am. The towering and daunting north face loomed above us as we made our way up the apron and to the base of our climb. The North Face is a complicated series of cliff bands from top to bottom, making routefinding a key component. A lot of steep traversing and exposed moves are involved, adding a little flavor and spice to this particular line. The north face also holds a lot of local ski mountaineering history.

Moving along the apron:

Looking up at the north face:

The North Face holds a consistent pitch of around 50 degrees from beginning to end. Throwing in a labyrinth of cliff bands and tricky mixed climbing and you got yourself a perfect ski mountaineering objective. The face rises approximately 2,000′ from the apron, so there definitely is quite a bit of exposure involved as well as time to make it to the summit.

Going up?

Mark working around a spine:

Middle of the climb:

Climbing steep pitches don’t really phase me all that much, but when you add long traverses across steep pitches then that is a different ballgame. I’ve never liked traversing steeps as it just feels unnatural and I’m always afraid I’m going to catch my ski pants with my crampons and go tumbling. I’m sort of clumsy when it comes to doing things like that as each spring I always end up shredding my ski pants via my crampons.

Mark stopping for a quick rest:

The snow from the apron to the summit was near perfect for climbing and skiing. There was a good 8″ or more of soft powder lying on top of a good solid base, making the climb efficient and supportive. After making the first long traverse we made good time cruising straight up to the next traverse and crux of the day. There is a cliff band that splits up the line where you have to traverse climber’s right about 30 yards or so to a non-descript gulley. Finding this gully can be a little tricky as it is not overly apparent that it goes all the way to the upper snowfield. After unsuccessfully trying to get up and over the cliff band, we wrapped around a spine and found the entrance to the upper snowfield via a short and narrow gully. If one were to drop into the line blindly from the top, routefinding in this section would indeed be very tricky. Whenever you get on steep pitches the views below are always deceiving and it is hard to tell what is a cliff band and what is not.

Once we made it to the bottom of the upper snowfield we cruised up to Punk Rock Band, where the second crux of the day presented itself. Punk Rock Band is the uppermost cliff band that stretches clear across the entire North Face. The height of the cliffs range from 15′ to 35′. From the apron I recalled seeing a few exit points in the middle of the cliff band. We found the exit points, but they were super narrow, full of rotten snow, and involved some technical moves to get up and over. Instead of traversing clear across the face and taking the NE ridge to the summit, we decided to give these gullies a shot and pushed our way up and over. Andy’s choice was clearly the easier route as he made it over the cliff band rather quickly. Mark and I took a different route and battled to make it up and over. I enjoy mixed climbing as I grew up rock climbing, but Mark always has a hard time with snow, ice, and rock, so he was rather gripped. On top of that Mark has short arms and legs, making it even more difficult for him to get up these technical sections.

Mark working his way up through Punk Rock Band:

Once above Punk Rock Band all there is left is the summit ramp. A couple hundred vert of easy walking and you are done.

The summit ramp:

It took us about 6 hours to reach the summit as we took a few long breaks throughout our approach. The day was near perfect as there was virtually no wind, the air was mild, and the sky was crystal clear with only a few puffy clouds moving about. We enjoyed the fine weather on the summit for a good 45 minutes and then prepared for our descent.

The upper portion of the peak was your typical wind blown sastrugi, but once we got past Punk Rock Band, we had nothing but soft powder all the way to the apron. I always enjoy dropping in on a steep face and making those first few turns. I think it is the unknown and the uncertainty of what to expect that gets the blood flowing and the mind focused. Once those first few turns are over, then the body and mind relaxes and everything seems to become fluid in nature. For our descent, we decided to take the far skier’s right portion of Punk Rock Band. This connects you with the NE ridge route and involves one tricky move along the ridge and around the cliffs. Once we got under the Punk Rock Band, we traversed back to the middle and made our way down the steep and soft upper snowfield. The snow along this portion was absolutely sick. Deep, supportive, and consistent.

Mark across the middle face:

We worked our way down the face and as soon as we hit the apron that is when conditions went from powder to variable really quick. We worked our way back down to camp through the late afternoon. A rather fine day on a super fun mountain. After cooking up some dinner I brought Mark back down to his truck. It was a short trip for him as he had family in town and couldn’t stay the entire weekend.
