This has become the winter of deep powder tree skiing. The snowpack and weather this season has been very tricky, making it tough to get up high and tackle the high peaks and lines here in Colorado. Instead, most of the focus has been on skiing lots of yo-yo style deep powder stashes across the northern part of the state. The storm systems have been consistent, freshening things up every few days and cleaning the slate for untracked day after untracked day.
Routt County scenic:
Last week was Mark’s birthday, so we cruised up to Routt County for the weekend and scored big time. Now, I can’t remember how many times I’ve gotten through a day where I’ve said those familiar words “deepest day ever”, but this day took the cake by a landslide. I don’t think it could have gotten any deeper that day. It was unreal. Absolutely the perfect setup for a deep powder day. Imagine 3′+ of the lightest and driest snow with no wind effect and completely untracked. I will never forget this day for as long as I live. Everything sort of fell into place on this trip and we ended up skiing lots of vertical and getting an endless supply of choking faceshots. Words can’t really describe the great skiing we had, so I’ll let the photos speak up on this blog post. Enjoy the pics.
The skin up was slow, deep, and a lot of work……..but oh so worth it!
Mark wondering if the end is near:
Then it came his turn to break trail:
After a few hours of trenching up the mountain we decided we had enough. Mark 1st lap:

Lap after lap, white room after white room:
Down near the bottom I got the hankering to play around on this feature. Can you spot the skier?:
