About

WEKNOWSNOW.COM is a personal project documenting my days spent out in the Colorado backcountry. Follow JP and crew around to all the Colorado backcountry hot spots in search of the biggest terrain, deepest powder and best lines. Each entry relates to a trip or outing we’ve made, we try to include pictures or video and information regarding the snow conditions and avalanche safety.

Some features of the site include dynamic CDOT I70 road and weather status, current CAIC avalanche report, and I70/resort web cams. The CDOT road status is generated every 5 minutes and polls the cotrip.org site for road status. The script builds the graphics based on the current status. The CAIC graphic is pulled from the CAIC website along with the daily avalanche report every hour. The image is cropped using Image::Magick and displayed on the sidebar. The most important piece of the graphic, the Danger Rose is present. Also, under the Interactive Links nav bar, you will find a weather and I70/resort webcam dashboard, this shows all the current images from the resort and CDOT webcams. Also NOAA weather information is located on one page.

October last year I purchased a Yamaha Phazer Mountain Lite snowmobile, so you’ll see lots of videos, pictures, mods and information relating to that as well.

BACKCOUNTRYMAPS.COM: is an idea spawned from a drunken converstation between two friends. JP had an idea to use google maps api to map out the spots we’ve been. Alex thought, hey that would be pretty sweet to and handy tool. So backcountrymaps.com was born, allowing users to create waypoints on the community or private maps. Associate those waypoints with trip reports and other information, including pictures, video, snow depth, anything! Also, we have a featured map section that includes Colorado Snotel Sites, Colorado Avalanche Data, I70/Resort Webcams and many more. On top of all that, you can overlay USGS Arial, USGS Topo, JPL GM, and Nexrad Weather on your map. That gives you a full picture of any backcountry location.

SNOWFILMER.COM: is a site dedicated to providing a home on the web for professional and anyone interested in snow sports videography. Tons of technical infomation, and learn from the best.

WARNING: The backcountry is a very dangerous place, especially in Colorado with the continental snowpack. Please get avalanche training and understand the danger. Do not use this site for information of backcountry spots and assume it is safe. YOU CAN DIE! Learn how to spot avalanche terrain, use your avalanche rescue gear and get in the habit of following avalanche reports and checking the hotlines before any slog. Avalanche is no joke and not a day goes by in the backcountry where we see 100% of people with proper gear. Respect in the backcountry is essential, do NOT assume that the group before you’s line is still safe, do NOT follow other groups, make your own educated backcountry decisions. Please contact us if you have any interesting projects or ideas, we are always looking to get involved with good things. If you are interested in getting involved with us, send a message.
