Colorado Backcountry: Fly Fishing Fathers Day - Indian Peaks - 06.17.2007

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

My dad picked me up super early this morning and we up into the high country to have some fun, hike around, and scout some new fly fishing areas. Now my dad is used to the big waters of Wyoming and Montana so it’s hard to motivate him to get out in search of the “little guys”. We had a great time, weather was nice and cool — a bit windy, which made fishing the lakes harder. We stuck to the in-lets and out-lets mostly. My dad was the “guide” for this little excursion, he gave me a bunch of pointers and I ended up hooking a small brookie! We were Nymphing and he took a small Pheasant Tail Bead Head.

Backcountry Gear: 2000 UZJ100 Land Cruiser Build - Part 1 - 06.15.2007

I’ve been thinking about this for a long time and the time has finally come. After looking at the countless sick rigs and builds on ih8mud.com and sleeoffroad.com. Time to upgrade.

I use the 100 primarily to get me, my friends and our snowmobiles / snowboards to the backcountry. Over 80 days a year towing the sleds. Moderate 4 wheeling and lots of camping. I love my LC, got it 4 or 5 years ago as the second owner. I’ve had zero problems with the truck and I have a trusted and great local mechanic who rocks! The 100 Series is my 3rd LC, I had a 40 Series on 35s with a Chevy 350….. And an bright orange 60 series.

I hope to add bumpers and some other stuff in the future. Some pictures of mods that I’ve already completed are below.

Colorado Backcountry: Indian Peaks Wilderness - 06.01.2007

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

Photos and words by Alex

“These baby foxes were wrestling near the trail head today. They were bouncing and crashing into each other, then rolling around until the dust cloud surrounding them made it hard to see. They seemed fat, healthy and happy to be alive having a wonderful time in the short periods of sunshine that warmed the green and flowing valley. Spring has finally come to Colorado and the wild life is out. The lower elevations are thawed completely and colorful with the spring flowers and plants slowly populating what was ice and snow a few weeks ago. The trail was still patchy with snow pockets and chattered with run off. The backcountry along the front range is showing all signs of a great summer season. There is lots of water, still plenty of snow at the higher elevations (above 10K) and many animal sightings.

Gnarles and I did some backpack training near the north fork of the Boulder creek just down the road from Eldora ski resort. Our goal was to get some fly fishing in and to start working on those backpacking legs to gear up for the season. We carried “2 day” backpacks (~50lbs) and spent the day tooling around looking for fishing holes along the river, wildlife and scouting for spring ski lines.”
