Colorado Backcountry: Loveland Pass

Again this weekend I meet Mike up at LP hella early to get some lines in before the mass crowd of gapes. We got to the east portal switch back around 6:30am and started hitching. We must have gotten 10 or so laps in before anyone else started to show up. We sessioned some of the hidden stashes all morning and once the crowds waiting for pickups started to get too big we shuttled using Mike’s truck. Ret, Mike and I spent another 2 hours doing laps where ever we wanted switching off the driving. The snow wasn’t the best, but we were still able to find plenty of hidden fresh. Around noon, Mike and I broke off to dig a snowpit near the Sheep Creek avalanche path above Loveland basin. We dug a 8 ft deep pit roughly 11,600ft, 32degree slope angle, N-NE. We did shear and compression tests and found a very weak layer roughly 8-12″ before the surface. Many layers below this, including almost 3 feet of depth hoar. We saw many skier triggered slides and natural point release slides around the Widowmaker and Loveland Ridge. We decided to stay around treeline. Mike took off after we dug the pit and I did some more laps up on LP.

Sunday the plan was to meet up on BP and do some lines in the mines and vortex. Ret failed to show, so the backup plan was to meet at LP for some laps. Mike and I got to LP around 6:45am and it was closed due to avalanche blasting. We waited at the base for a good 45 minutes watching them blast the seven sisters chutes. At least 12″ of new snow the night before we were ready for some serious pow. Once the pass was open we were surprised to find only ourselves riding. We put our beacons on and avy gear and decided to do laps just below treeline. The snow was sick, light blower pow from the night before, we had lap after lap of untracked pow. It was good to see JHBluebird and Fejj up there as well. Pictures coming soon..

Also some kids were up there building the most sketch road gap jump i’ve ever seen, i got way bored of waiting for them to hit the thing so i don’t know if anyone got hurt or not. The jump was about 3 times too small for the gap, i took some pictures. Anyone else see this shit??

Colorado Snow Conditions: Winter Park/Mary Jane

Yesterday I decided to take the day off after watching this storm on the front range. Watching it all day it didn’t really look like it was going to pan out and most of the weather reports had it breaking up and heading south. Up at 5:30am Wednesday I was hitting refresh over and over waiting for the snow report website to update. WP/MJ was reporting 14″ at the base at 6am, and it was snowing hard. I got in the truck and went toward the pow, upon arrival at MJ I was pretty much the first car in the lot. Got my gear ready and started boot packing up under the Challenger lift. The pow was super deep, the kind where you forget what board your riding cause you don’t see it much of the day. After hiking til 8:45, I dropped into Sleeper to completely untracked powder, made my way back down to Challenger lift and got second chair. Rode the front side of MJ most of the day, knee deep most of the day everywhere. It was snowing very hard all day and by 2pm we had another 6″ fresh snow. After a quick lunch break I was over at Timberline doing laps in the trees, the snow here was even deeper. So deep sometimes you’d choke on that shit. Loveland Pass Saturday.

Colorado Snow Conditions: WP/MJ/Caribou

Saturday I rolled up to MJ to get some laps in before the mass crowds of drones showed up. Went straight back to the Timberline lift and dropped into Larkspur. Down in the bottom of the bowl in the trees there is always hidden stashes of powder and I found a good amount. Did 5 or 6 laps here and decided to head over to the other side of Parsenn Bowl and do the long glade runs back down to Sunnyside lift. The snow over here wasn’t as good, but I still managed to find some pretend-a-fresh. MJ got 8″ new snow earlier in the week and you’ll have to search to find it. Around noon I decided to bounce and head over to Berthoud Pass, I was surprised to see the lodge jump still built up. With some new snow on the ground it was nice and soft so I sessioned for an hour or so. Trying to beat traffic I left the BP summit around 1pm and made my way toward Nederland. I took the new Central City highway and it drops you straight onto 119, from there you can head into Nederland. Guru’s of Nederland was throwing a nice rail jam straight in the center of town but it didn’t start til around 7pm. I heard rumors of some jumps and rails setup on Caribou so went to check it out. After a short hike back from the lot you have a choice of a step-up, smaller wind lip, couple of rails, a big ass kicker and a little jib box. It was getting dark, so I made my way back down to Nederland to watch some of the rail jam. They had a trap box and long step-up box setup.

Loveland Pass

Sunday I woke up at 4:45am to snow! I got my gear ready as fast as possible and set the truck towards Loveland Pass. Got to the East Portal switch back just before 7am, the same dude I met last week was chilling waiting for a pickup. We rode up together and started doing laps in some nice fresh powder. At least 6″ the night before and it was still snowing pretty hard. We just did lap after lap of untracked powder lines down the Loveland Ridge valley. Around 9am the snow started to lift and the sun was poking out, it started to get more crowded so we made our way to the Triangles. At this point I was riding with this guy I had just met named Mike, he was showing me some of the hidden stashed back here. It was pretty sick, we tracked fresh turns pretty much all day, didn’t wait more then 20 minutes for a ride up. Once the sun started to poke out we could see a few natural slides that had released over the night, also people were starting to make their way over to the Widowmaker–which was in pretty good condition to slide. Very wind loaded conditions, we saw a few rider trigger slides, and with the new snow today the conditions will get worse. We decided to play it safe and stay just above and below tree line. The CAIC danger rating for the day was Moderate with pockets of Considerable on N-NE-E-SE.

Illuminati Hybricon 157.5
Saturday I rode the Illuminati Hybricon for the first time, this board is sick. Get one, it will make you a better rider. The thing holds an edge like no other, shreds the gnar super hard. The board is stiff and very stable, great on jumps. Lots of pop, turns and shreds in any condition. The base is super fast and if you wax it up with some all temp Bluebird your golden. Its a directional board but rides just as good backwards. Actually I almost like riding it better switch. This is now one of my new favorite boards, can’t wait to get it out again in some deep steeps. Go get one while you still can, these are hot.

Colorado Backcountry: BP/LP

Saturday morning Red and I met up for some shreddin up at Mary Jane. No real new snow in a while we went straight for the Timberline lift. Crowds weren’t too bad until about noon, we did laps here and in the bowl all day. Down on Larkspur we found some almost fresh powder in the trees. (look here for stashes) Bored of MJ and the gapers we decided to head up to BP for some hiking and booter hittin. We made our way up the west face to this nice sized booter about midway, messed around here for a while and decided to hike the summit and drop into Current Creek. Surprised we found some nice untracked lines back down to the highway.

Sunday was the freaking bomb, I had no idea where I wanted to ride so I just basically pointed the truck towards the mountains. I ended up a the base of LP around 7:15am, only one other dude around. I got my gear set and waited for a pickup to the top. Me and homeboy got a ride up to the top together and since no else was around we decided to charge the ridge and get fresh lines down the Widowmaker face. The snow wasn’t the best, way better over at BP. We were able to get some good lines in and did at least 3 laps before others showed up. At this point I just started meeting and shredding with people left and right. Showed some kids where the hut was, found 2 new smoke shacks. Around noon I found myself at the bottom of LP again, this time my new homies from d-town were over in the lot cooking some brats. I was stoked they saved me a brat cause I was having too much fun shredding. After noon I met up with these other kids that had a pickup truck and were doing shuttle runs. We burned them down and pretty much rode with them the rest of the day. It was great, for a while it was just me and this dude in the back of the truck, his girlfriend was shuttling us around from spot to spot. We rode the Arrow, The LP Basin drop, and tons of lines on the normal pass area. There are booters everywhere up on LP, I mean its a huge play ground of shit. There are tons of rails and little jibs setup near the East Portal lot.

Monday I was a little wrecked from shredding all day Saturday and Sunday so AKD and I decided to build a jump up on BP. We were hiking up the east face and noticed that the lodge had a ton of snow on it. We thought, wouldn’t it be sick to build a jump to drop off the lodge? After some careful scientific calculations we concluded that it would be sick. sick as fuck. We started building the shit around 7am, done by 10am. Sessioned the lodge jump for a while, then decided to head over to Mary Jane again for some laps up on Timberline. Kick ass weekend, lots of shredding and some good snow.

Tomorrow, I think I’m going to go check out that rail jam up in Nederland, then maybe head over to Caribou. I heard from this chick at Falafel King that they had a few rails and some jumps setup there. Caribou and Eldora are like 30 minutes from my house. LP again at least one day this weekend, maybe head up to Cameron Pass and see what is setup.
