Avalanche Incidents - International Summary for 2009-2010
March 8: For the current season beginning October 1, 2009 the Avalanche Center has
posted 89 reports with a total of 322 fatalities. Our database now contains reports
on 1579 avalanches since October 1, 1998.
Avalanche Incident - Idaho - December 18, 2009 - Snowmobiling
One snowmobiler died and another was buried but survived. Few details at this time.
Avalanche Incident - Oregon - December 18, 2009 - Skiing
A skier was caught in an avalanche on Garfield Peak and impacted trees. He survived but had
serious trauma injuries.
Avalanche Incident - Montana - December 10, 2009 - Ice Climbing
An ice climber was caught in an avalanche triggered by two climbers above. He was carried down a
gully and over the ice climb below and died. This was at an organized event and the party that
triggered the avalanche had survived another one earlier that day.
Avalanche Incident - Oregon - Climbing
Two climbers were critically injured in an avalanche on North Sister and air evacuated to Bend.
Both were Mazama climb leaders with avalanche training from the Mazamas or MountainSavvy.
